Jamal's Story

Jamal took part in the 20-week Box Champions boxing and mentoring programme in 2018 to help to build his confidence and resilience.

Jamal was referred to us by Bristol-based charity 1625 Independent People. He had found himself on a troubled journey and had arrived in Bristol after making his way from Somalia via Italy and London. Unfortunately, Jamal was living on the streets before being helped into supported housing by 1625.

By the end of his time with us, Jamal was living in independent housing and working for Royal Mail at the sorting office. Jamal says:

"When I came to Empire I found more than just a club. I found a family, a community, I found something to be part of. It's more of a home to me than just a ring. I came from a bad place and now I am on the way to sorting out my life - one step at a time."
